Making Interlibrary Loan Requests

How do I request materials, how long does it take to get them, how long may I borrow them, and are there any charges?

Getting Materials:

Books, videos, CDs, audio tapes:

Many libraries will not lend their media materials. You may be able to obtain the item more quickly at a nearby video rental store.

For quickest delivery, first check Summit. If not available to you there, use WorldCat to place your request.

  • Summit: check Summit, the catalog of the Orbis Cascade Alliance. If your title is available, you can order it by clicking on request this item The item should be available to you in three working days. Summit items are lent for 6 weeks (no renewal) or 3 days (no renewal), depending on the policy of the lending library. See Overdue fines for fines and charges. Summit borrowing is available only to UO students, faculty, and staff. (Note: Summit does not provide individual articles.)
  • Worldcat: Locate the item by author and/or title, then click on the title link. Next, click on the World Cat ILL button in the gray area near the top of the screen and fill out the form. Your request will begin processing immediately and should arrive within 4-10 days. Items are usually lent for 21 days plus one 21-day renewal. Depending on the policies of the lending library some materials may be borrowed for shorter periods or used only inside the library. If you still need the material after the due date or renewal date, contact ILL staff via email or telephone (lborroill@uoregon.edu, or (541) 346-3055) and they will request approval for an extension from the lending library.
  • Library forms: If you cannot locate materials through Summit or WorldCat, use these request forms:

Articles

Requests articles submitted through a FirstSearch database or other electronic indices and using the Find Text button. If the material you need is not available in any of these databases, you may request the item using the Journal Article Request Form. These articles arrive within 2 - 4 days at your desktop computer. If the owning libraries charge, the fee is passed on to non-faculty borrowers. Photocopy charges average between $10-$15 per article.

Dissertations

Many dissertations can be borrowed from the university where they were written. They also can be purchased through University Microforms for $29. A print copy is sent to your home within 5 - 7 days. Policies regarding fees and charges are the same as those for books.

Microforms

Find the title in Worldcat and enter the dates you need in the "Comments" box. Delivery times and policies regarding fees are and charges are the same those for books.

Charges:

UO students and staff: Usually, there is no charge for borrowing books and obtaining journal articles. If there is a fee, you will be contacted before items are requested.
