Open Access Week, Oct. 19-23, Explores Academic Publishing Issues - (October 5, 2009)
The University of Oregon Libraries will help celebrate Open Access Week on the UO campus Oct. 19-23 by hosting a series of lectures, panel discussions, workshops, and other activities on the topics of scholarly publishing and open access.

Home Movie Day in Portland Celebrates Amateur Filmmaking, Sun., Oct. 18 - (October 5, 2009)
Whether it is footage of grandma blowing out candles at her 80th birthday party or a cops-and-robbers movie made by grade-school kids, Home Movie Day in Portland is an opportunity to share, preserve and celebrate old films. Screenings and education will take place on Sunday, Oct. 18, from noon to 5 p.m. at the UO Portland's White Stag Block, 70 NW Couch St. Community members are encouraged to bring their 8 mm and 16 mm home movies for inspection and potential exhibition. Local film experts, along with archivists from the University of Oregon Libraries, will assess the physical condition of the film before projecting movies for viewing.

Law Library Purchases Digital U.S. Serial Set - (September 18, 2009)
A critical resource for the study of American history, politics, and society is now available online to the UO community, thanks to the Law Library’s purchase of the digital version of the U.S. Serial Set. This digital collection of government publications captures key aspects of American life from the early 19th century onward, including agriculture, westward expansion, scientific exploration, politics, international relations, business, and manufacturing. Few, if any, research collections compare to the Serial Set in time span, subject variety, source authority, and diversity.

Library Participates in Intermingle Event, Fri., Sept. 25 - (September 18, 2009)
The UO Libraries is participating again this year in the university’s Intermingle event, the largest campus-wide interactive event of the year, scheduled for Friday, September 25, from 5 p.m. to 2 a.m. in the Erb Memorial Union.

Science Library Offers Wild Duck Electromagnetic Carbonic Acid Test Extravaganza II, Friday, 9/25 - (September 17, 2009)
The UO Science Library welcomes students to the UO with its one-of-a-kind Wild Duck Electromagnetic Carbonic Acid Test Extravaganza II. Come to the Science Library from 12:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. on Friday, September 25, to see your friendly neighborhood spider fangs magnified 20,000 times. Watch chemicals melt and boil simultaneously and then freeze at the flick of a finger. Experience light you can't see, quantum phenomena in action, and possible energy sources for the future. Run your fingers along the bones of Oregon's ancient wildlife. And watch live as we create volcanic eruptions that shoot soda to our roof. Did we mention free pizza and soda?

UO WorldCat Expands Catalog Searches, Offers Improved Interface - (August 13, 2009)
Beginning Monday, August 17, library users can conduct a comprehensive catalog search of more than 90 million items held by libraries worldwide. The new system, called UO WorldCat, also offers a streamlined interface for search results that combine, into a single merged list, the collections of the UO Libraries, Summit libraries, and hundreds of other libraries worldwide. A UO WorldCat search identifies all types of materials: books, journals, journal article citations, videos, DVDs, CDs, maps, and government documents.

Noisy Electrical Work Planned in Knight Library’s South Reading Room, Aug. 21-28 - (August 13, 2009)
Knight Library users may experience noise disruptions when using the South Reading Room on the second floor on Friday, August 21, and continuing through Friday, August 28. Electrical contractors will be core-drilling through concrete in several areas of the room in order to install electrical outlets for use in the study areas. We apologize for any disruptions.

Oregon Newspapers, 1860-1922, Going Digital - (July 7, 2009)
Oregon history, from 1860 to 1922, as chronicled by the state's newspapers will be digitized for public access under a $364,042 grant to the University of Oregon from the National Endowment for the Humanities and Library of Congress.

Romance Languages, UO Libraries Enact Open Access Publishing Policies - (July 7, 2009)
Faculty members in the UO’s Department of Romance Languages and the UO Libraries have voted to adopt an open access mandate, which directs all faculty in those units to archive open access versions of published research in the UO's institutional repository Scholar's Bank.

Library Program Offers UO Faculty Members Up to $1,000 Support for Open Access Journal Publishing - (July 7, 2009)
The UO Libraries has established a pilot program for UO faculty members to cover a portion of the cost of author submission fees to open access journals. Funding is available now through winter 2010. Funding support will cover up to 100 percent of the author fees for publishing a peer-reviewed manuscript in an open access journal, with a maximum reimbursement of $1,000 per article.
