Aerial Photography Research is a fee service. Library patrons who are not members of the Oregon University System may request to view the prints or obtain digital image files via download. Requests can be placed via e-mail or fax. This includes, but is not limited to individuals working for private, state, or federal organizations. Oregon University System students, staff, or faculty members, please see the academic request page. Fees go toward recovering the cost of providing the service and the maintenance and development of the collection.
Answers to questions patrons have about copyright, image usage rights and other information about our operations.
The research fee is $50.00 per hour for aerial requests made by instate entities, $60.00 for out of state patrons. Note that actual time spent processing and filling a request is billed. Prices provided here are estimates and may vary based on the location of your site, the accuracy of the information you provide, and the nature of your request. There is an additional fee for duplication services. See below for details.
E-mail or fax are the preferred method for requesting photography. All photo requests must include a request form, unless a MAP staff member says otherwise. Requests can also be made in person, but keep in mind that the actual research takes 3-4 business days. Requests are not accepted over the phone.

All photo requests must include a map. Acceptable maps should be appropriate scale to the size and dimension of the site and show enough context for us to identify the location. USGS 1:24000 topographic maps and local area road maps are highly recommended for smaller urban sites while 1:100,000 scale maps are appropriate for larger sites. Tax lot maps can be sent as supplements, but are not replacements for topographic or street maps. For e-mail requests a map should be attached as a small file in .jpg format. Please take a look at our sample maps.
The Map and Aerial Photography Collection offers digital reproduction services. This service increases the viewing resolution and thus the quality of the duplicated images, allows for easy digital manipulation of images, use within a GIS and saves time in shipping and duplication.
Scanned images are available for maps and photos in compliance with copyright law. Images are scanned at a standard resolution of 600dpi, in jpg format. Patrons may request a higher resolution or tif format as well. For optimal viewing we recommend that you download the files and review them in imaging software. If you would like images burned to a CD can be written and mailed to you (please see Delivery below).
Scanning services are billed at $40 per hour. Typical scanning times are listed below. These times are based on the 600dpi standard resolution and may vary for maps, large format items, or higher resolution scans. A large site may require a larger portion or the whole of a 9x9 inch print be scanned. The cost to scan a full frame print is $20 at 600dpi. If a duplication request will result in large amounts of scanning or research time (more that three times the normal) the customer will be notified before work is started.

We strive to have requests finished in 3 business days. Typically photos are scanned and posted to our website.Scanned images will be posted to the Libraries' web server. Each request will be assigned a unique page on the library server. These pages will not be linked to any other pages, in order to maintain your confidentiality. Images will only be kept on the website for 1 week after scanning so it is critical that patrons save these files to their own computers. After 1 week, photos will be deleted, unless other arrangements are made.We can not be held responsible for files that are not retrieved in a timely fashion: requests for deleted photos will be billed as new requests.
We can also create CD-ROMs. There is a flat fee of $5 to write to CD-R's. CDs will usually be shipped on the third business day after the request is made. Disks can be sent through the US Postal Service, or via Federal Express. Customers who wish to use FedEx must provide their account number on the research request form. The cost for shipping via USPS will be added to the research invoice. USPS shipping and handling costs are usually less than two dollars.
You will be billed by mail shortly after the completion of your request. Credit card payments (Visa and Mastercard) are accepted only by phone once you have received your bill. Failure to make payment within 90 days of billing will result in the suspension of your account. We reserve the right to require pre-payment in cases of poor payment history.
