File naming will probably be dictated by how the data will be analyzed and possibly by the software that is being used to manage or analyze the data. But there are some basic elements to a good system for file naming.
- Use something simple and intuitive so that it can be easily followed within the constraints of the research process
Refine as you go
- Conducting a basic pilot test is the first step in ensuring that your file naming conventions and file structures are practical and reliable. Even with a pilot test, additional revisions might be necessary.
- As you are conducting fieldwork, creating datasets and analyzing data, review your file names and how they are working with your software and workflows (including data collection and analysis).
- Sample various folders to ensure that the file naming conventions are being adhered to during the research project. It is very costly to have to go back and rename and reorganize files once the project is complete. Going back to reorganize the data can also disrupt analysis by relocating files where the software analysis has old file names in it's coding.
