Reserves are books and other print and non-print items which are required materials for coursework. These items are placed in specially designated areas within the library and given shortened loan periods. Course reserves include syllabi, books, lecture notes, journal articles, class assignments, sample tests, videos, audio cassettes, and other relevant information to support classroom instruction.
In Knight and branch libraries:
Reserve collections are found in the Knight Library and branch libraries: Architecture and Allied Arts Library, Law Library, Mathematics Library, Oregon Institute of Marine Biology (OIMB) Library, Portland Library and Learning Commons, and the Science Library. In the Knight Library, reserve collections can be found in the Reserves and Videos Room, the Document Center, and the Douglass Listening Room.
On the web:
Electronic Reserves (E-Reserves) offer access to electronic course materials 24 hours a day. Instructors may place text files, journal articles, book chapters, bibliographies, graphics, and class notes (all subject to copyright law) on E-Reserves. E-reserve readings are available through Blackboard. For more information see the E-Reserves FAQ.
Select the Course Reserves tab at the top of any library webpage and then search by either instructor's name or by course to find titles and call numbers of materials on reserve for your class.
Following are the reserve location names in the online catalog.
Some reserve items may be taken from the library; others must be used on site. Reserve materials have loan periods between two and twenty four hours. Loan periods for most items are chosen by the instructor.
$4.00 for first hour or any part, $1.50 per subsequent hour
The library is responsible for providing access to reserve materials to all students. Fines are structured to encourage borrowers to return them on time. In addition to late fines for returning reserve items overdue, people who frequently or purposefully hold items from other students are referred to the Office of Student Conduct.
Reserve staff process requests from instructors in the order in which they are received. During the first few weeks of each term when the majority of requests are received, it may take from four to eight days for the material to be ready for use. Items for reserve which are received during the later parts of terms are normally processed within one to three days.
You may submit Reserve Request Lists using the On-line Reserve Request Form or a paper copy of this form available at all Reserve Desks. More information about reserve request lists can be found on the Course Reserves: Faculty Information page.
